why protein is important for energy

Protein is essential for a variety of reasons, and one we don’t think of is that it provides energy.  Most people know protein is important for building muscle, but it's also necessary for maintaining maximum energy levels.  When you don't get enough protein in your diet, you can start to feel tired and run down.  I can not ever emphasize the importance of protein enough with my nutrition clients.  I work with ladies every day who don’t realize they are consuming about half the protein they need on a daily basis.  It’s a huge problem!  Protein helps to create enzymes that are used in the production of energy.  By ensuring you're getting enough protein, you can keep your energy levels high, build lean muscle mass, and stay productive all day long.

Protein is so important for your body, in general. It is responsible for so many functions in our organs, muscles and tissues.  When we do not fuel our bodies with an adequate amount of protein, this could lead to a number of health issues down the road.

If you’re reading this and saying to yourself, “I’m not even sure how much protein I’m currently eating or how much I should be?”  Know that you are not alone!  This is one of the #1 things I address with all my clients.  If you feel like you need help, talk to a certified health coach, like myself.

Protein is an essential macronutrient that provides the body with energy.  It does so by building and repairing muscle tissue, as well as providing a source of fuel for your cells to use during exercise or other physical activity.  Eating protein also helps regulate appetite and reduce cravings for high-calorie foods, which can lead you to eat less overall.  You might wondering to yourself, what are some good sources of protein?

Some examples include meat, poultry, fish, eggs (both white and yolk), dairy products like milk and cheese (in moderation and if you have food allergies, avoid altogether).  Personally, I have been plant-based for 32+ years now, so obviously my sources of protein come from soybeans such as tofu or edamame beans; legumes such as lentils; nuts such as walnuts; seeds such as sunflower seed kernels; and pea protein just to name a few.  Pro-Tip:  Always choose non-gmo and organic when possible!

The fact is without protein, we would never have the energy to make it through our day.  Protein is a crucial nutrient that can help us stay energized and strong throughout the day with its amino acids building blocks for muscle growth!  So next time you're feeling drained, reach for some high-quality protein like salmon and chicken breast or for my plant-based friends, grab some edamame or make a protein shake (My favorites are Vega Sport- it’s clean and packed with 30g or try one of the Sunfood Smoothie Mixes- you can opt for 2 scoops for 24g )!  When you include protein in all your meals, you’ll have an instant boost of energy!  Bring on the High-Fives!
